The place for printing, research and teaching
Betterpress Lab is the original heart of Betterpress. Founded in Rome in 2014 by Francesca Colonia and Giulia Nicolai, it's an independent studio dedicated to letterpress and hand-crafted typographic printing, where presses, movable type, paper and ink become tools for contemporary design and experimentation.
In the Lab we hold and use a collection of wood and metal movable type, and we work with recovered and restored presses, keeping an ancient practice alive through new languages and new forms of research.
Here we create typographic projects, prints and editions, run workshops and educational programmes, and collaborate with artists, designers, schools, and Italian and international academies and universities.
Betterpress Lab is also a space for study and experimentation: it hosts teaching programmes, special projects and residencies for artists and designers interested in exploring typographic printing as a means of expression.
A workshop where you learn by doing, experiment with materials, and keep imagining new possibilities for print.
